General Assistant to the SVP and Publisher of Perseus Books and to the PublicAffairs Imprint

The job is divided between administrative support for the SVP Publisher of Perseus Books (25%) and general administrative support for the PublicAffairs imprint (75%) across all departments, editorial, marketing and publicity.

The role will include but not be limited to, assisting the Perseus Group Publisher in scheduling, meeting planning, travel appointments and general administrative support.

The assistant will also help editors in loading data in to Pubtracker, booking meetings, ensuring the flow of approvals for contracts etc, marketing and general publicity support as required and as time allows.

Publicity Manager

This position reports into the Publicity Director and plays a vital role in the execution of publicity campaigns for the imprint, including all types of media, author events and relevant conventions, and helps to manage the publicity team for the imprint.

PublicAffairs/Nation Books/ Economist Books, a current-affairs-focused nonfiction imprint of the Perseus Books division of the Hachette Book Group, is looking for a dynamic, creative, and enthusiastic publicity manager to help lead our publicity team.

As part of the PublicAffairs publicity team, you’ll handle nonfiction publicity campaigns from manuscript through publication, including creating press materials, planning tours and events, facilitating reviews and feature pieces, booking interviews, arranging travel, and working with our marketing department to create an online and social media strategy for the book. You’ll work with the many organizations associated with our authors, from Participant Media to Partners In Health to McKinsey and AARP. You’ll also help shape PublicAffairs’ overall publicity strategy through meetings with media, conversations with editors about potential and upcoming projects, and preparing publicity materials for sales meetings.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Responsible for implementing original and compelling publicity plans for a diverse list of titles (trade paperback, mass market and eBook original formats) each season through traditional and online media campaigns, industry, and author events.
    Create press releases, pitch letters, promotional materials and media lists with a goal of securing national, regional, and local media in print, broadcast, and select online outlets.
    Help to organize and manage the PublicAffairs publicity department, and help to mentor and guide junior staff on campaigns.
    Communicate with editorial, advertising, and sales as part of a cohesive publicity effort for each title.
    Strengthen and develop media and genre tastemaker contacts in addition to maintaining strong relationships with authors.
    Help plan and execute the imprint’s presence at industry events such as BEA, ALA, and other large-scale events as required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:

    Bachelor’s Degree.
    5-7 years of publicity experience with extensive media contacts, a well-rounded knowledge of trade book publishing, and a strong interest/background in current events, politics, and business.
    Effective organizational and project management skills and proven ability to work well under pressure with tight deadlines.
    Effective communication skills (oral & written) for interactions with media, authors, and in-house constituencies.
    Self-motivated, hands-on, creative individual with strong initiative and judgment.
    Ability to work well independently as well as in collaborative or team environments.
    A leader who possesses experience and a style that will create trust and confidence.
    Proven ability to deliver timely, accurate work product and demonstrate good follow up and follow through.
    Drives change and innovation by improving work product or process, and challenges established norms where appropriate.
    Proven ability to build supportive and constructive relationships within and outside of the organization; takes the lead in inspiring others to work together for mutual benefit.
    Excellent organizational skills with the ability to multi-task, prioritize and manage time effectively while also ensuring accuracy of work through attention to detail.
