This book is about the celebration of an artistic life--a career that has involved pioneering efforts with a lot of very talented people, including Imogene Coca, Nanette Fabray, Carl Reiner, Howard Morris, Mel Brooks, Mel Tolkin, Neil Simon, Larry Gelbart, Woody Allen, and other performers, writers, and crew who worked together to entertain millions of people every week. For thirty-nine weeks a year, we created magic in the era of live television, with no cue cards, no teleprompters, and no second chances. We worked hard and created the near impossible because we did not know we couldn't do it. It was a euphoric combination of fun and terror. For almost nine years, families made watching the show an event. To this day, I still get people who come up to me and say, "Thank you for the laughter of my childhood." When people remember the shows, they not only remember the comedy, they remember their parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, aunts, and uncles. They remember a time when everyone was together and everyone was laughing. No one was yelling or fighting. Whatever was going on at home, on Saturday night people got to laugh and they got to see their parents laugh, and they have that memory to hold on to. I feel honored to have given them that. This book is my way of saying thanks back. |
