"DDT," DeLay assured him, "is a very viable pesticide, and in fact, the stoppage of usage of DDT around the world now is costing about two million people their lives a year—because of malaria." Cronkite blinked. "You in effect deny the general assumption—by a lot of scientists at any rate—that the bald eagle was saved, the osprey was saved, many birds were saved by banning DDT?" DeLay nodded. "There is scientific fact, by many scientific studies, that show that the claims made by Rachel Clark in her book Silent Spring indeed had no scientific basis—it was all based on emotion." As Cronkite sputtered, DeLay went on, "There is no crisis of acid rain in the Northeast. In fact, instead of spending the billions of dollars that have been imposed on industry...we could have simply spent $500,000 on lime, and put it in the lakes in the Northeast, and corrected the acid problem." He laughed. "Now, that's what I'm talking about. You need good science, reasonableness, and common sense in this debate." Playing at the edges of DeLay's smile was a knowing smirk. He got a kick out of shocking this icon of the media. But in power DeLay has demonstrated a fundamental disinterest in any real debate on any issue... "We have a strategy," he told Cronkite that day, "of using every tool available—every vehicle available to us—to make sure our positions prevail." Take the man at his word. He will do anything to win. |
