Late evening. Snow had been falling heavily on Warsaw for hours, and Colonel Ryszard Kuklinski drove cautiously, trying to keep his blue Opel Rekord from veering out of control. Warsaw dimmed most of its streetlights in winter to conserve energy, but he had committed this route to memory, and he did not need maps or signs. As he drove, the wipers barely cleared the snow from the windshield before it was covered again. Kuklinski concentrated on the circuitous series of back roads he was taking to reach his destination. After more than an hour, his drive had taken him just a few hundred yards from his house; he wanted to be certain he was not being followed by the Sluzba Bezpieczenstwa or SB, the Polish secret police. He turned down the Wislostrada, the broad boulevard that ran parallel to the Vistula, the largest river in Warsaw, and one of the few thoroughfares where the streetlights were left on through the winter. Soon, he began to count the lampposts that lined the street. He gradually slowed the car, and then hit the brake forcefully, causing the car to skid into the curb. He switched off the engine, opened the door, and grabbed a tightly wrapped cellophane package on the seat beside him. He then trudged to the front of the car, and with one hand, began brushing snow from his windshield. In the other, he clutched the small package, which he casually dropped on the ground beneath the streetlamp. Kuklinski drove home, and walked around his house to a wooded area in the back, where he stood behind a clump of trees. In the distance, he could see the Wislostrada, and the spot where he had dropped the package. He knew his footprints would soon disappear in the falling snow, but he prayed that his American friends would arrive before the package was completely buried. The package contained critical information: on three sheets of paper, he had detailed Moscow's plans to invade Poland the following week. Kuklinski waited as the minutes passed, shivering as an occasional car drove by. |
