I wanted to write about the struggle for rights in which I engaged while memory still serves in getting the story straight. In the process I had an opportunity to think afresh about the strategies I pursued and, in more than a few cases, to revise judgments made in the heat of battle. Writing this book also gave me a chance to relive my encounters with the many remarkable men and women all over the world who enlisted in the rights cause over four decades and who helped make it the only secular faith that survived the twentieth century in good repute. |
