I have been in the forefront of the battle for women's reproductive rights for most of my adult life. Still, a female supporter of Planned Parenthood, who was a generous donor and a good friend, said to me once: "Men are not entitled to an opinion on this issue!" What issue were we arguing about? She thought the issue was abortion. I suddenly realized the issue was reproduction and that men were certainly entitled to an opinion. I have spoken with literally hundreds of women considering their options when they found themselves pregnant. Would they give birth or not? Was this the right time, the right man, the right economy? What would their family or neighbors say? Some gave birth and some had abortions. Abortion wasn't always a defeat or a case of making the best of a bad situation. For many women it was a conscious step in creating their own reproductive destiny and having the children they wanted when they wanted them. Having reproductive rights enabled these women to do this. That is why reproductive rights are vital for humanity. I am the third generation in my family fighting for women's rights. I'd like to end this battle now so that my children won't have to fight it. |
