The first chapter of The Cat From Hue was written in 1977, between jobs at CBS and ABC, but the genesis was earlier. What I had seen in Vietnam was so extraordinary, so far beyond the experiences of ordinary life, so incredible to float in memory, that I was compelled to write and share them with a wide audience, to learn from them, to try to understand the mystery of the Vietnam War. Also, my adventures with the cat, a hard-core warrior with Viet Cong sympathies, were symbolic of the painful American-Vietnamese embrace. Telling the stories on TV, even with an hour of airtime, could only condense what actually happened. Much of the subtlety was missed. Now I have tried to tell them all, including, for the first time, the darker stories that I self-censored at the time. The Cat From Hue is the result of over eleven years of full time writing, a journey in itself, and has enabled me, as a mature adult, to see for the first time what I, as a young man, could not comprehend. |
