What this book tries to do is utilize the Vail arson and its subsequent criminal investigation as a way to explore a number of issues. Of course, there's the crime, the costliest "ecoterrorism" act in history. There's also Vail itself, a faux-Austrian ski resort created less than forty years ago from a high-altitude lettuce patch. Vail's story is filled with eccentric and bombastic characters, from the furriers to the pizza chefs, the corporate titans to the night shift snowmakers. Through the eyes of these various, and varied, characters, I've tried to reveal the different strands of Vail's many layered social fabric. The story also provides a vehicle to delve into a number of pressing environmental and business issues. Indeed, Vail's tale is a parable for our times: how the global economy stretches its tendrils into the most unlikely places--like this bucolic alpine valley in the Rocky Mountains; how the post-Drexel Burnham Lambert hostile takeover mentality has migrated to the unlikely environs of the ski and recreation industry; how environmental conflicts over recreation have shifted; how communities come together, and how they split apart. In some ways, Vail is like no other place in the world; in others, it is like an increasing number of places. By tracing a mystery and a cast of suspects that includes almost everyone in town, I hope to illuminate both the forces that led to this massive crime and that shape all our lives and the decisions we make, wherever we live. |
