In the many years I have been writing about Asia, I started noticing that the impressions of the region I had brought from America didn't match what I saw with my own eyes. The Asia of the Western imagination was exotic, incense-scented, mystical, and sensual. The Asians of Western films and literature were depicted as servile and sexual, or as steely and cold. In Asia, I found a different reality largely unportayed. But I met Western men entranced with the stereotypes, falling for Asian femininity based on expectations born of these images. And I met Asian women who asked me this question: Why do Western people view us as submissive, obedient, and obliging? To answer their questions, to understand what was truly going on at this nexis point, I realized I would have to dig deep, into the images in Hollywood and Western literature, into the history of West-East interaction, and into the roots of a subconscious racism most of us don't realize exists. The result is an examination of what I call "The Asian Mystique," a distorted prism of images that affects how we in the West view Asia and Asian people. After years of exploring this phenomenon and talking with hundreds of people, I realized that this mystique affects everything from cross-cultural marriages to business interactions to international relations. We like our well-intentioned fantasies of "the Orient," but they are not only impractical but perilous in the modern world. Everyone who reads and absorbs the arguments presented in this book, I believe, will never be able to see Asia with the same eyes again. |
