A note from KISHORE MAHBUBANI

I have lived eleven out of the past twenty-two years in America and have been fortunate to make many friends here, many of whom can discern that America is moving into a troubled relationship with the world. But they are not quite sure why. They seem bewildered. Some believe that America's problems with the world only began with the developments after 9/11. Alas, many of these problems have deeper roots.

As a lifelong fan and friend of America, I felt an obligation to explain to my American friends what has gone wrong. Having lived both in Asia and America, my life experience has provided me an unusual vantage point to understand both points of view: America's and the world's. In Singapore, I grew up in a Hindu family, living next to Islamic neighbors on both sides, in a Chinese majority society. Combined, the Chinese, Muslims and Hindus make up over half the population of the world.

During my postings to the UN as Singapore's Ambassador, I have travelled frequently around the US, speaking to many different audiences. Through these frequent travels, I began to feel that I understood a little the soul of America. And it distressed me that so many in the world had begun to develop a negative view of a society that I respected enormously. Hence this book. The Economist once wrote: "For a diplomat, Kishore Mahbubani is refreshingly rude." I have not set out to be rude in this book. But I have tried to put across, gently but firmly, some hard truths.
