In Liberty Under Attack, we have assembled an equally illustrious group of authors who will show how dear a price the country has paid for failing to discuss incursions on freedoms adequately and openly. The fundamental principles that historically distinguished the United States, earning it worldwide admiration, have been undercut in so many ways that it will take many years and much effort to regain our past moral standing. Meanwhile, injustices against innocent citizens, abuses of power, and counterproductive incitements of international hostility toward the United States continue. Our goal with this volume is to renew and expand an open and robust debate—a debate that will begin the process of undoing the damage to our democracy and values.
