A note from SUSAN WICKLUND

I never meant for this book to be about me. Although it became something of a memoir, my tale is only the framework for what is truly important: the stories of women must not get lost in the political rhetoric surrounding the abortion debate. I am one of those women, but only one. The urgency behind this book comes from being tired of seeing patients who carry the shame and guilt inflicted by groups claiming some moral high ground. I'm tired of women believing that they are the only ones having an abortion, when in fact, between 40 and 50 percent of American women will have an abortion at some point in their lives. I'm tired of politicians who claim that they are trying to help women with restrictive laws and cynically misleading titles like "A Woman's Right to Know" or "The Child Protection Act." Most important, I want women to know that abortions are not rare, not dangerous, and not a condemnation of their character. What I deal with each day bears no resemblance to the news stories and strident political debates. I meet with real people; they are our mothers, daughters, teachers, and neighbors. I hope that my life story can be a vehicle to discuss this very common, yet often hidden, human experience.
