A note from LAWRENCE FREEDMAN

"The many conflicts in the Middle East—in Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Lebanon, Palestine, and Israel—all have their special features, but they also interact with one another. Conveying this interaction has been one challenge of this book. Another has been to acknowledge the importance of the issues connected with American policies in the Middle East, and the strong feelings they excite, without getting lost in polemics. The polarization of opinion is often reflected in books that are seen as being for or against Israel, sympathetic to the Iraq War, or unremittingly hostile, cynical, or forgiving about official motives.

With such dramatic material it would be impossible to find a bland and inoffensive middle course but my aim has been to respect the evidence, interpret it with care, and try to do justice to this fascinating, though frequently tragic, story.
