POWER HUNGRY The Myths of "Green" Energy, and the Real Fuels of the Future

SUMMARY | EXTRAS
Unconventional wisdom from Power Hungry
The U.S. has built a $14 trillion-per-year economy based on
hydrocarbons. The transition to renewable sources—and
no-carbon sources like nuclear power—will take most of the 21st
century and require trillions of dollars in new investment.
The U.S. sits atop oceans of natural gas, enough to last 100
years. By using that gas in parallel with new nuclear technologies,
America can lead the global transition to a lower-carbon
future that can be described as N2N: natural gas to nuclear.
Renewables are not green. Wind and solar power may be
popular, but they also require huge swaths of land—for transmission
lines and energy generation. Add in their deleterious
impacts on humans and wildlife, as well as their huge appetites
for steel and concrete, and it's apparent that the most-hyped
segments of the "green economy" are not green at all.
America is a world leader in energy efficiency. Over the past
three decades, the U.S. has been among the best at reducing its
energy intensity, carbon intensity, and per-capita energy use.
And it has achieved those reductions without carbon taxes or a
cap-and-trade system.
