How to Know When a Diet is Right for Your Dog

A pet’s diet is one of the most important aspects of keeping him or her healthy. Here are some signs to look out for to know if you’re feeding your dog the right food, according to Dr. Marty Becker, “America’s Veterinarian.” He has been a popular contributor to ABC-TV’s Good Morning America for 10 years and is the resident veterinarian on The Dr. Oz Show.

  1. A huggable coat and visible health. An optimum diet gives your dog’s coat shine, volume, and luster. It imparts to your dog shiny eyes, strong bones, and healthy skin.
  2. Vitality. Dogs on the best possible diet play a little harder, walk a little longer, and look healthy and strong.
  3. Green lawn. If your lawn is dotted with yellow spots from dog urine, there’s a good chance you’re feeing your dog the wrong food.
  4. Small, compact waste. Dogs eating their optimum diet produce less waste.
  5. Healthy weight. If your dog is over- or underweight, you may be feeing him the wrong diet—or you may be giving too much or too little food. Talk with the veterinarian about both the food and the portion.
