HBG Big News This Week: July 23-27, 2018

Following is a recap of major news at Hachette Book Group for the week of July 23-27, 2018:

Bestsellers: HBG has the top slot on the Hardcover Nonfiction list again this week, with Liars, Leakers and Liberals by Jeanine Pirro (Center Street) debuting at #1 (she’s also #1 on the Combined P&E list). HBG has 12 titles on the list overall. Our distribution clients have twelve titles on the list this week, including one #1—Last Week Tonight with John Oliver Presents a Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo by Marlon Bundo with Jill Twiss (Chronicle), #1 on the Picture Books list. Major release: Hachette Books and LBYR simultaneously published Olympic medalist Ibtihaj Muhammad’s inspiring memoir PROUD: My Fight for an Unlikely American Dream (adult) and PROUD: Living My American Dream (young readers). Itbihaj and PROUD are featured in a great discussion and Q&A in the New York Times, a CNN.com op/ed by the author, interviews on Salon Live, NBC News, Today.com, iHeartRadio’s Money Making Conversations, ESPN’s Get Up, MSNBC’s Ari Melber, WNYC’s Brian Lehrer Show, and Matter of Fact with Soledad O’Brian.

NAIBA Sales Rep of the Year: Congratulations to Judy DeBerry, recipient of the 2018 Kristin Keith Sales Rep of the Year award, presented by the New Atlantic Independent Booksellers Association (NAIBA). Many of you know Judy well—she is a senior field sales rep, national account manager at HBG. She started with the company in 1991 as one of Warner Books’ original sales reps. When contacted with the news of the award, Judy replied “First just let me say I LOVE my accounts! And I LOVE my job!” (And it shows!)

Dublin Literary Award: Gather the Daughters by Jennie Melamed and Spacemen of Bohemia by Jaroslav Kalfař have been nominated for the International Dublin Literary Award. The full longlist will be announced in November, the shortlist in April 2019, and the winner in June 2019.

World Fantasy Award: Fonda Lee’s Jade City (Orbit) is a finalist for the 2018 World Fantasy Award for Best Novel. This is the third major award nomination for Jade City, following nominations for the Nebula Award for Best Novel and Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel.

Daphne du Maurier Award: Marissa Garner has won the 2018 Daphne du Maurier Award for Excellence in Mystery/Suspense for Risky Redemption (Forever). The award is named for Daphne du Maurier, the author of Rebecca, a suspense novel with romantic and gothic overtones and a precursor to today’s romantic suspense. The Award is presented annually by the Mystery/Romantic Suspense chapter of Romance Writers of America, also known as the Kiss of Death (KOD) chapter.

PRISM Award: Rebecca Zanetti has won the PRISM Award (Light Paranormal Romance) for Twisted Truths (Forever). The PRISM Awards are given by The Fantasy, Futuristic and Paranormal (FF&P) Chapter of the Romance Writers of America to honor excellence in paranormal romance.
